چکیده

Overlay networks have received a lot of attention due to the recent wide-spread use of peer-to-peer (P2P) applications such as SETI, Napster, Gnutella, and Morpheus. Through replications at numerous peers, digital content can be distributed or exchanged with high resilience and availability. However, existing P2P applications incur excessive overhead on network traffic. For example, Gnutella, which broadcasts queries to search shared content, suffers from an overwhelming volume of query and reply messages. In this paper, we investigate the issues of trading-off storage space at peers to reduce network overhead. We propose signatures for focussing searches along selected network paths, and introduce three schemes, namely complete-neighborhood signature (CN), partial-neighborhood superimposed signature (PN-S), and partial-neighborhood appended signature (PNA), to facilitate efficient searching of shared content in P2P networks. Extensive simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of our proposal with existing P2P content search methods, including Gnutella, Random Walk, and Local Index. Results show that PN-A gives much better performance at a small storage cost.

Performance Evaluation of Neighborhood Signature Techniques for Peer-to-Peer Search

Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems have received a lot of attention due to the popularity of applications such as SETI, Napster, Gnutella, and Morpheus. The P2P systems present tremendous challenges in searching data items among the numerous host nodes. While search has been studied in a similar but different context, i.e., parallel and distributed database systems, the large scale and dynamic membersh...

A Novel Caching Strategy in Video-on-Demand (VoD) Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Networks Based on Complex Network Theory

The popularity of video-on-demand (VoD) streaming has grown dramatically over the World Wide Web. Most users in VoD P2P networks have to wait a long time in order to access their requesting videos. Therefore, reducing waiting time to access videos is the main challenge for VoD P2P networks. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for caching video based on peers' priority and video's popula...

Searching in Unstructured Overlays Using Local Knowledge and Gossip

* This paper analyzes a class of dissemination algorithms for the discovery of distributed contents in Peer-to-Peer unstructured overlay networks. The algorithms are a mix of protocols employing local knowledge of peers’ neighborhood and gossip. By tuning the gossip probability and the depth k of the k-neighborhood of which nodes have information, we obtain different dissemination protocols emp...

Searching Techniques in Peer-to-Peer Networks

This chapter provides a survey of major searching techniques in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. We first introduce the concept of P2P networks and the methods for classifying different P2P networks. Next, we discuss various searching techniques in unstructured P2P systems, strictly structured P2P systems, and loosely structured P2P systems. The strengths and weaknesses of these techniques are high...
